The W3 committee supported local
student Kathryn Pollard, 20, who sold
hundreds of balloons for a balloon race
at the 2009 Weekend. Kathryn has put
the proceeds towards her target of £2,000
for Childreach International. In September
2009, she and fellow students from
Nottingham University were planning a
sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.
2009 balloon race results: Furthest travelled balloon,
returned by J C Houldsworth of Arram, East Yorkshire. Winning balloon sold to E Gould, of Kettleshulme. Each receives a £25 prize.
The committee of Whaley Water Weekend was invited by British Waterways to support moves to redevelop the Transhipment Warehouse. The committee was represented on the steering group. A £50,000 feasibility study took place, and plans are now being finalised. A 'master plan' - including the new bridge into the local industrial estate - reducing traffic near the canal basin - is being developed by High Peak Borough Council.
Through our canal links, the Whaley
Water Weekend committee is a natural supporter of the Transport Trust. This national charity has just introduced the Red Wheel award - the transport site equivalent of blue plaques on the homes of famous people.
One of the first in the country, on the wall of the Transhipment Warehouse at the Whaley
canal basin, seen here, was unveiled
in the summer of 2009. A further plaque was unveiled at nearby Bugsworth Basin. Guests, including the chairman of British Waterways, Tony Hales.and MP Tom Levitt, were shown around the inside the warehouse.
